- One Expert's Opinion - A Top U.S. Strategist to the Military, Thomas P.M. Barnett, writing in his weblog on April 13, 2007, gives his personal opinion (not those of Enterra Solutions he manages) - about how to stop the Genocide in Darfur, Sudan:
".....everyone
knows that if America organized a mulitinational military presence (hell,
just our air cover like with the Iraq no-fly zones), the killing
could definitely be stopped (or severely reduced) now and not
at some distant future when Sudan's exacerbated
disconnectedness would only ensure its further suffering. Whereas if
America chooses not to participate and leaves
it to the vaunted UN, you can just plain forget about any serious remedy..."

Why Hasn't the United Nations Stopped This? - Many Are Asking
It's been over two years - and Now the dead total between 200,000 to 400,000 and the U.N. has NOT stopped it. It's clear their is a problem in betting on them for a solution.
In fact - the New York Times in an August 4, 2006 editorial writing about Sudan's President resisting a U.N. force said:
"...He is able to get away with this largely because China, a permanent member of the Security Council [of the U.N.], continues to protect him with the threat of its veto.
One reason China stands behind Mr. Bashir [the President of Sudan] is oil. ..some 7 percent of China's imported oil comes from Sudan ...another factor is ... it might open the door to unwanted meddling in its own affairs - with regard to Tibet, for example...."
SO - With Between 200,00 and 400,000 Lives Taken So Far - It Makes Little Sense to Be Waiting for the United Nations to Do What It Has Not Been Able To So Far.
It is Urgent to Get a Solution by NATO. NATO has already Proven to be a Solution to Genocide when it stopped the Genocide in Kosovo.

An E-Mail to Us from an Executive in the American Red Cross
"There's some really great movement going on |
The Worst is NOT Over - Senator Biden Continues:
"What I would say to those who argue that the worst is over is this: over the course of the last 2 years, the government of Sudan and its surrogates killed as many as 400,000 people and drove one third of the population of Darfur off their land. Two million people remain in internally displaced or refugee camps. Attacks continue.
It may be true that they are not as systematic as they were 6 months or a year ago, but I submit to you that it is not because the African Union stopped the attacks. It is because systematic attacks are no longer necessary for the government to continue to terrorize civilians. It is because as many as 400,000 people already are dead, and hundreds if not thousands of villages have already been destroyed. The attacks may be less systematic, but they are not over. And it does not make them less horrific.
What About the AFRICAN UNION "Observer" Force - Many Ask?
Here's More of What Senator Joseph Biden (Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee) said in the Senate Resolution (PASSED UNANIMOUSLY) Requesting more NATO Help Now -
The Reality in Sudan
"I traveled to the Chad-Sudan border in May of 2005. One of the sector commanders from the African Union force came across the border to meet with me. He told me point blank, that he had neither the manpower, the equipment nor the mandate to stop attacks on civilians. But we in the west have the manpower and the equipment--and, if the political will is there, we can secure the right mandate. And that is why we must help."

SO WHAT CAN - YOU DO - THAT WILL REALLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE?
Petitions, Emails and letters obviously Have not Been Enough to solve this. We won't stop these - but what else can we add? 200,000 to 400,000 lives have been lost and the killing of defenseless men, women and children cries out to the world for a solution, an end.
Vast numbers of concerned and vocal citizens obviously do influence lawmakers - the U.S. Congress is an example. But our groups have that it is definitely easier to avoid a name on a petition, or in an email - than it is to discount a live voice from a citizen.
We Have Been Told by U.S.
Congressional Offices They
Are Listening and
Responding to our Phone Calls
So You Can Expect the Same in
Your Country
Frankly, a great number of the U.S. Congressional aides - the ones you reach on the phone - were highly attentive, open and agreeable to pass our requests, in many cases, directly to the Congressperson. Many remember us and send back emails to update our groups.
In fact during January of this
year (2006) - our group received back from Washington a number of
phone messages that we left - and those included the two top offices
of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Our contacts included
many other Senators' offices and the two co-chairs of a 240 plus
member-Human Rights caucus in the U.S. House of Representatives.
We were told in an Email that our
"bilateral efforts are working. Don't stop" by one of the
top two Senate Foreign Relations Committee offices - we were also
strongly encouraged by and acted upon by offices in both the U.S.
Senate and House of Representatives.
Many aides willingly and patiently listened to us and gave us the names of other key aides in other Lawmakers' offices to call and also took the time to give us well-reasoned suggestions on what to say.
Lawmakers' offices showed a strong and passionate response - and in many cases followed up with a set of actions - a tribute to them and the Lawmaking and peace process for International Human Rights.
One Washington office sent us an Email with the Poll showing the strong support for NATO to stop the Genocide in Sudan. This, along with the many other respected supporters of NATO as a solution, has become the focus of our effort to create support among all NATO countries through citizens calling and following up with the Legislative bodies.

Although stopping the Genocide and Slavery and in Sudan will Require much more military support - which NATO can bring - the following strong support from the U.S. Congress shows how serious the need - and what kind of solution is needed now.

This U.S. Resolution's Complement in the House of Representatives (Lantos-Pitts Resolution) needs the support and strength of NATO troops.
WITHOUT ANY MORE COST - NATO IS ALSO A PROVEN FORCE TO STOP GENOCIDE - IT WAS SUCCESSFUL IN KOSOVO
NATO was the critical solution to stopping the Genocide in Kosovo -There is a proven Formula for Stopping a Genocide. Read what an Internationally Respected Group just had to say about the African Union Mission in Sudan:
March 17, 2006 International Crisis Group New Report - "The small African Union Mission in Sudan (AMIS) has reached its military and political limits", says John Prendergast, Crisis Group Senior Africa Adviser. "There's just no way AMIS can give civilians the protection they need and prevent this war now escalating".
WE'VE KEPT RECORDS OF WHAT WE'VE LEARNED AND CREATED A GUIDE TO HELP OTHER CALLERS
We've made it easy for others to follow - and Get Results - by writing up a Guide -"3 Effective Methods to Stop the Genocide in Sudan" - a "How-To" Guide from a citizens' campaign that helped save 600 Sudanese lives.
It includes a list of Internet links for many of the NATO countries' Lawmakers. (The remaining ones can be found by putting into a computer search engine like Google or Yahoo, words such as Lawmakers or Parliament for the name of your own country.
Our Guide also tells you what Lawmakers' aides want to hear first, and how to deliver a message that they are more likely to react to. We've even been told by Washington aides why they are listening to our group - and we wrote about that in order to help you to me effective with your own contacting.
E-Mail Advice Based on Feedback from Congresspeople
We've also compiled follow up emails with recommendations - that cover the critical points - and include the effective tool of providing lawmakers with significant outside sources, and attachments. One very key Senator's Foreign Policy person emailed us back "Great" when she got this and continues to listen and update us.
The initial contact takes some effort, and then many relationships build. In a word - many are glad for our input - our involvement. This method also allows us to build a bigger and more effective "master" log of Email addresses - the direct ones - of the key aides - for future contacting.
Tracking Our Results Has Built a Chest of Very Helpful Information - We've included all of this on a separate page - along with a sheet to track your results - which many have found keeps them motivated - and inspired. You can print all of this out easily - along with the master list of House Representatives including their phones.
Who To Call
Well - clearly right now we want to persuade those who Have Not voted for measures that would stop the Genocide. So, we've included a list of all the votes - including the "not voters" - for a recent measure on Sudan. We recommend - an idea that was very recently much approved by an aide in a top Congressional office - that you call those Representatives who did not support this measure to help.
We've included all of this on a
separate page - along with a sheet to track your results - which many

Tracking Our Results Has Built a Chest of Very Helpful Information
In short - it works - we just
need people like you who care
to work it
